CranioSacral Therapy

Developed by John Upledger, DO, and taught through the Upledger Institute, CranioSacral Therapy is a light-touch, full-body technique used to evaluate and treat restrictions originating in the brain, spinal cord, and connective tissue. It is a gentle method of detection and correction that encourages the body to heal naturally by removing blocks that create imbalance in bodily functions.

The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face, and mouth (the cranium) down to the sacrum at the base of the spine. Because this system influences the function of the nervous system, an imbalance or restriction in the craniosacral system can cause sensory, motor, or neurological disabilities throughout the body. These can include symptoms such as chronic pain, scoliosis, impaired motor-coordination, and learning problems.

CranioSacral Therapy employs a variety of gentle, hands-on techniques to remove restrictions and resolve imbalances in the tissues so that the body can return to a freer and more balanced state of health. Clients are fully clothed for a CranioSacral session. A session lasts one hour.

Visceral Manipulation

The visceral system concerns the biomechanical relationships that exist between the natural movements of the organs and their effect upon the structures of the body. Visceral Manipulation, developed by French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral, is based on the use of specific, gentle, manual force on tissues supporting the internal organs in order to free them of restrictions and encourage a return to normal mobility, tone, and motion both of the organs and of the tissues that support them.

Used in conjunction with CranioSacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation deepens and enhances a treatment session by providing an adjunct method of removing restrictions in the tissues so that the body can heal imbalances and flow toward better health.
